Execution

The How Matters Most

By Scott Abbott4 min read

We all appreciate the importance of a good why. Your purpose, your cause, your passion, the reason you get out of bed and the direction you're headed. I believe in that deeply. And of course you need a what: the specific product, service, and ideally the solution you're passionate about, the one people actually want to buy, the one where you've found real market fit and understand how the pieces come together. But if I'm being honest with you, at the end of the day it's the how that decides everything.

The how is where it lives or dies

How do you get things done? The structure. The systems. The process. So many people simply assume that part takes care of itself, as if a compelling purpose and a great offering will somehow execute on their own. They won't. Strip away the mechanics of delivery and the rest goes quiet: the why becomes a nice sentiment, and the what becomes an unkept promise. Without the how, everything else is basically moot.

It's a package deal

Now, let me be clear. This is a package deal. Ideally you have all of it working together. That's exactly why in the BOS-UP world we believe in the nine core competencies and in the idea that everything connects, each piece reinforcing the next. The who, the when, the where all matter too, and I'd never wave them off. But of every part in that equation, the how is the one people most often skip, and the one that most reliably separates the teams that deliver from the teams that merely intend to.

Production over potential

Ultimately this comes down to production over potential. You have to deliver. Potential is a story about what could happen; production is the evidence that it did. When you pour your attention into the how instead of romanticizing the finished good or falling in love with the imagined result, a strange thing happens: the results start showing up on their own, because you finally built the means to produce them.

As they say, the journey is the destination. So do the work. Do it great. Be your best. Give the why its due and honor the what, but don't kid yourself about which part carries the weight. Master the how, and everything else you care about finally has a way to become real.
