Leadership

Competition + Character

By Scott Abbott3 min read

On the day of the big IU vs. Oregon Peach Bowl game (go Hoosiers!), it has me reflecting on why I'm such a passionate IU fan in the first place. Yes, the talent and the wins matter; but it's really the character, chemistry, and culture that stand out to me. There are so many parallels to what we focus on at BOS-UP: the how and the why, tailored and structured approaches, clear processes and systems, strong organization, and the balance of head and heart, profit and purpose, vision and execution. When those elements come together, whether in sports or business, something powerful happens.

That said, competition and character are not mutually exclusive. You can strive to win, push for excellence, and chase victory lane with everything you have — and still respect the opponent across the field. That's what this moment represents to me. The Hoosiers compete with intensity and purpose, but they also play the right way. Talent matters. Preparation matters. But temperament, culture, and the ability to truly coalesce as a team are what separate good programs from great ones. Winning is the goal, but how you win always matters most.

So here's to everyone who competes hard, aims high, and refuses to apologize for wanting to be the best; while still honoring the game and the competition that makes excellence possible. On that note, much love and harmony to all: cheer for your team, respect the battle, and appreciate the opponent. And as for me ... go IU!
