Leadership

Timeless Principles, Timely Requirement

By Scott Abbott4 min read

John Wooden was one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time. But more importantly, he was a great human who helped other humans become their best. His record speaks for itself.

But one of his greatest legacies is the Pyramid of Success. He built it decades ago, long before AI, automation, or any of the systems we rely on today. And yet … it's never been more relevant.

Smarter systems don't replace the human — they expose the human

We're living in a time where systems are getting smarter, faster, and more efficient. But none of that replaces the human. If anything, it exposes the human. You can have the best tools, the best strategy, the best operating system … but if the people behind it lack genuine discipline, accountability, teamwork, and leadership, it breaks. That's the reality worth paying attention to.

AI can produce. Systems can optimize. Humans must:

  • Lead when it's uncomfortable
  • Stay accountable when it's inconvenient
  • Put team first when ego wants the credit
  • Show discipline when nobody's watching

That's the difference.

A simple check-in: where are you, really?

This post isn't meant to be heavy. It's more like a check-in. If we were sitting on a porch, having a drink, just talking it through, I'd ask you one simple question: "Where are you, really?"

Not where you want to be. Not where you think you are. Where are you actually regarding you and your team's leadership, management, teamwork & accountability? And more importantly: where are you proving it in your actions?

Because what gets measured gets better. And what gets ignored will show up somewhere you don't want it to.

The fusion of systems, technology, and humanization

Build and leverage a great business operating system (BOS). Benefit from AI, technology, and automation. Become a great company. But don't miss the point: this should also push us all to be better humans, not just more productive. That fusion of systems, technology, and humanization is where everything clicks best.

Measure yourself. Apply it in your business, your work, and your life … or don't. But understand this: your results reflect your decision.

Here's the new reality: great organizations embed LMTA behaviors — Leadership, Management, Teamwork & Accountability — as standard operating procedure (SOP) and agreement-based commitments. Now, what say you?
